gardening woes

Today we mourn. Our tomatoes were first infested with tobacco hornworms and now have been infected with curly top virus and they will all die. So I'm posting these photos so we can remember our tomatoes after they die. Gardening is hard!

Welcome to New Mexico. Gardening is not easy here but we continue trying to get something out of our garden, why? I guess we like the challenge. No, we like the few vegetables we do harvest.

I'm beginning by battle with squash bugs at the moment. It's a losing battle but I'll try and keep the plants alive as long as possible.

Having grown up in New Mexico I didn't realize gardening could be easier than this until I spent a summer in Utah and two in Pennsylvania. Those are blessed lands.

If our tomatoes thrive (they look good so far, although I did yank out two plants last week that were starting to get curly top to keep it from spreading) we'll bring some over to you.

Oh, and if you don't have squash or zucchini, we'll have plenty of that too.

Oh, that is so sad. We are all so hopeful when we first plant and then to have all that worked dashed. I'm sorry. Drew reported that my tomato plants are being eaten by deer so I don't think I will have much to come home to either. There will be glorious gardens in your future I am sure! Love you, Mom

you poor girl....what a tragedy...if I had a garden I would send you some of my tomatoes, but I don't....It is wonderful you try so hard to plant a garden in the desert...lol...good luck with the other plants...you can do it!!!

you should just build a little greenhouse, so you can control all the conditions of your garden! wouldn't that be soooo cool?? i would totally come and help build it! or get one of those topsy-turvey tomato planters that you stick the plant in hanging upside down and water from the top. Apparently it's all the rage in NM. j/k but i kinda want to see if they actually work. and i bet it helps with crawly critters, since they'd have to make a giant effort of actually reaching your tomatoes!

I'm so sad for you and nervous about my thrown together garden that I had a dream that I had bull frogs attacking all of my plants (eating huge holes through the leaves) and when I told them to go away, they hopped to my open door and raided my home!!! I'm crazy!!! You can share my garden if it works out!
