someone's wearing their cranky pants today

Benson woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Big time. And it's a good thing I had a hilarious email from my sis in law Megan this morning or I could have veered dangerously toward the same path. Anyway. this seems to happen quite frequently around here. He wakes up and cries and whines and throws fits, and I have to say it is very hard to deal with first thing in the morning. I have tried being super peppy, ignoring it, indulging it, and distracting him. None of these seem to help and I am out of ideas. I would love to hear some suggestions from the rest of you, if you have them.

On the other hand... Banks is so happy! Isn't he cute?

Ryen used to do that. We used to secretly call her the Morning Monster. The only thing that worked for her was to (and this is going to sound HORRIBLE, but...) take her directly to the family room, sit her on the couch with her favorite stuffed animal and blanket, turn on her favorite cartoon, and give her 10-30 minutes to chill. I have no idea what the deal was or why she needed to do that, but as soon as she had that time, she would hop off the couch and be as perky as can be. Crazy, but true. I hope you find what works for Benson because starting the day with a Morning Monster is NO fun! At least take some comfort in the fact that you are not alone. :)

I know that even some adults need some time in the morning to gear up for the day. My suggestion is to find something that works for Benson (like what megan said) that allows him to get ready to be happy. You could even assign a special "happy chair" so that he knows in the morning he can go sit in the big cushy chair and get ready for the day. Explain to him that if he's feeling grumpy he needs to sit in his happy chair until he can be nice. Hook him up with the silky, a book, the tv, whatever and let him decide to be happy. he's old enough to choose.

banks is very very cute! my sister told me that some kids just dont get the sleep we think they are and told me to put ambrose to bed way earlier than i do and let him cry it out. of course, benson is not a baby anymore so this may be hard- but it also just may work if you can think of a creative way to keep him in bed... :)

I hope some of these suggestions work, because at our house, there are still days Roz wakes up mad and is mad all day. Maybe if I had given her a feeling grumpy chair earlier we could have avoided those not so fun days. I feel for you! Hopefully tomorrow might be better. A lot of times in Rozlyn's case she went to bed way to late.
